Spiritual direction is a ministry of presence. Every person is on a spiritual journey. Those who wish to explore aspects of their journey with the Sacred or deepen their life of prayer and spiritual practice may welcome the support of a trained guide. As a spiritual director I hold space, listen, ask reflective questions, introduce spiritual practices, and witness the journey of transformation. I'm particularly interested in listening for how God/the Sacred is present in your everyday experience and what you are being invited to at each stage of your life’s story.
Is spiritual direction for me?
If you are ready to reflect on your life, do some inner work. and deepen your spirituality you may benefit from meeting with a spiritual director.
People of many backgrounds, life stages, and faith traditions seek out spiritual direction.
What can I bring to spiritual direction?
As a spiritual director I do not set an agenda for what is discussed. Rather I work with whatever you bring to the session. You may come to spiritual direction with a particular question or life experience that you’d like to process, or you may want to tend to your inner growth in a more general way.
You may decide to meet with a spiritual director for support in:
Discerning and navigating transitions in vocation, lifestyle, relationships, gender and sexuality, etc.
Growing awareness of one’s True Self, often in relationship to God, others and creation
Grief work and processing loss
Getting unstuck in life or spiritual stagnation
Integration of previous life experience or trauma
Learning new spiritual practices
Exploration of existential questions
Shifting beliefs about God, spirituality, theology, etc.
Please note that spiritual direction may compliment but is not a substitute for professional mental health services. If you are experiencing depression, anxiety, or another form of mental illness that significantly interrupts your day-to-day functioning you may require therapeutic support from a counsellor or medical professional before engaging in spiritual direction.
Approach
I draw primarily from my preparation as a spiritual director and from a Gestalt Pastoral Care perspective, seeking to build on the seeds of health that are already present. GPC is rooted in the ministry of healing and combines Gestalt theory, spiritual companioning, and prayer. I also have a particular interest in embodied spirituality and encourage practices of listening to the body's wisdom.
I take a client-centered approach in spiritual direction. You can expect me to ask questions that invite you to tap into your own internal wisdom and the Spirit's guidance. I will invite you to experiment with expanding your awareness. I will ask guiding questions and introduce exercises that help to deepen your own understanding of your story, your relationships, and how the Holy is present in your life.
The way that a spiritual direction session unfolds will be unique to you and we will move at your pace. You can expect that your, "No," will be listened to and respected. I trust that if you're not ready to explore a certain part of your story or if an invitation that I make doesn't feel right, that your deep inner wisdom is saying this isn't the next step.
I also know that the Sacred is revealed to different people in different ways and there will be seasons when any Presence feels noticeably absent. I seek to remain open to how God/Jesus/the Sacred/Creator/the Universe/Light/etc. is present, guiding you toward more light, life and love. You will not be “diagnosed” or “treated” and problem solving is not the goal of spiritual direction. Spiritual direction aims to support the ongoing process of transformation.
